One of the main reasons the reefs around the Fish Eye Marine Park Underwater Observatory has such a great variety of fish is that there are many areas called cleaning stations. These stations attract a huge diversity of fish life. Everything from big sharks and rays to tiny young fish need to visit a cleaning station to be preened by cleaner fish to be free of parasites. If you look out the western observatory windows, you can see some of the stations. Any certain times of the day, especially in the mornings and late afternoons, fish line up to have cleaner wrasses perform this service. When the fish approaches a cleaning station it will open its mouth wide or position its body in such a way that signals it needs cleaning. A cleaner fish will come to it and then remove and eat the parasites from the body and even swimming into the mouth and gills of the patient fish. These stations are very important to reef fish as they both help the fish stay clean and healthy and they also help keep wounds clean and infection free until the wound heals.
